Metro Parks Tacoma's Youth Services division is seeking to add a new and dynamic team member in the form of a Teen After Hours Program Lead. Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, this position is responsible for teaching, supervising, and supporting youth through the After Hours Program at Eastside Community Center. Primary work will be with youth, ages 11-18. This is a part-time position, working mainly during afternoon and evening hours, averaging 20 hours a week.

In the performance of their respective tasks and duties all employees are expected to conform to the following:

  • Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.
  • Interact professionally with other employees, customers and suppliers.
  • Work effectively as a team contributor on all assignments.
  • Work independently while understanding the necessity for communicating and coordinating work efforts with other employees and organizations.
  • Observe applicable safety requirements, use safety equipment provided, implement appropriate safety practices at all times and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

Essential Duties

This position is responsible for safely facilitating enrichment programs for teens ages 11-18. Duties include but are not limited to: creating youth empowerment programs collaboratively with staff and teens; program planning and curriculum creation, supervising group activities by providing guidance and discipline if necessary; ensuring the safety of participants in a busy, drop-in setting; adhering to and enforcing the Eastside Community Center and Metro Parks Tacoma policies and procedures; fostering a community within the center that reflects the voice of young people; maintaining the facility by organizing, and cleaning as needed.
Typical work schedule is M – F 2:30pm – 6:30pm. Occasional evening hours include Late Nights (2x a Month Friday evenings 6pm – 9:30pm) and Youth Councils (2x a Month 6pm – 7:30pm).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience and/or formal education in the areas of education, youth development, recreation, or similar fields.
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school aged youth.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain by the time of employment a valid CPR/First Certification
  • Must have strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, to include evenings.  Work schedule may change at supervisor's discretion as needed.

Successful candidates will be skilled in the areas of patience, listening, prioritizing, multi-tasking, maintaining boundaries, along with written and verbal communication with a passion for youth-driven programming and mentoring young people. Knowledge and/or experience with Youth Program Quality (YPQ) methodologies is preferred.

Additional Information

HOURS:  Hours vary depending on scheduled events and activities. Set shifts for this position include Monday- Friday 2:15 pm – 6:15 pm. Additional working hours will be scheduled and set with direct supervisor. Work schedule may change at supervisor's discretion as needed.
LOCATION: Eastside Community Center (1721 E 56th St, Tacoma, WA 98404)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Ability to perform activities in assigned area.  Sight to prepare written or typed recreational and leisure program material and monitor activities.  Hearing and speaking to conduct classes and exchange information.  Walking over rough or uneven surfaces during field trips.
