12 or 24 hour shifts, including weekends

High School/GED Required

Job Summary:

Performs all responsibilities of a Paramedic as a medical team member in the assessment, treatment and transport of critically ill or injured patients in accordance with standing orders and protocols. Team member will also operate ambulance in a safe manner when required to drive.

Works under the direct supervision of transport RN, coordinator and medical director in providing direct and indirect patient care.

Performs patient assessment, stabilization and administers interventions providing quality patient care based on written protocols during transport or within the hospital environment.

Gathers, documents, and transmits information throughout the health system in a timely and accurate manner.

Acts as a resource to other staff as needed. Assists with the management of resources and other departmental programs.

Communicates with referral physicians, nurses and other healthcare members, patient and family on an ongoing basis to promote positive interactions and resolve conflict.

Acts as a resource person to other members of the healthcare team. Provides education, when needed, in area of expertise to others within the hospital, community, outreach and referral agencies.

Works in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare team members and provides consultation to staff. Participates in the planning, review and documentation of quality improvement activities.

Remains current with approved annual training plan to ensure CAMTS compliance.

Functions as a medical team member.

Attends shift briefings and mission debriefings and completes necessary documentation.

Performs other duties as assigned.


Education: High school diploma required.

Experience: Minimum 3 years in pre-hospital/ALS emergency care at the paramedic level

Certification Required: Licensed as an SC EMT-P. CCEMT-P is required within two years of hire. Current certifications in Healthcare Provider BLS; ACLS; PALS and advanced provider ITLS or PHTLS.

Special Training: National Certification may be required to meet state licensure requirements. NRP lessons 1-9 within 6 months of hire. Driving is required for this position using a Palmetto Health vehicle. Employees will be expected to adhere to the Palmetto Health Driver Policy and specific department driving policies. Employees must pass driver training. Valid SC driver's license and acceptable 3 year motor vehicle record as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle (MVR) Chart. One of the following advanced trauma care courses is acceptable: TNCC, ATLS/ATCN, TNATC or CAMTS-approved advanced trauma course within 6 months of hire. (Please note advanced skills lab must accompany all of the above mentioned advanced trauma courses).
