Starting Wage:

$13.65+ per hour depending on qualifications

The YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties is seeking an Aquatic Staff to create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. In addition, the LAS will assist with the development and maintenance of aquatic programs (to include, but not limited to: Lifeguarding, swim instruction, water aerobics, staff supervision and training, mission emphasis, as well as administrative projects.)
Essential Functions:
• Promote a positive environment that fosters fun, safety and our YMCA values.
• Maintain good public relations with members and always represent the best interests of the YMCA.
• Encourage member and parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
• Arrive with ample time to report to position at the scheduled time.
• Be responsible and fulfill your commitments to scheduled shifts. Notify an Aquatics Director personally and in a timely manner if you are unable to meet your commitment. This includes illness and extenuating circumstances.
• Assist other staff and perform other duties as requested. Assume other responsibilities as mutually agreed upon with the Director of Aquatics.
• Be constantly aware of all activities in the pool and on the deck.
• Know and enforce rules, as necessary, to ensure the health and safety of all participants.
• Be familiar with all emergency procedures and the functioning of emergency equipment.
• Keep the deck, program center, storage room and equipment clean and uncluttered.
• Administer first aid when required. Notify Program Staff or Building Supervisor immediately. Make sure the person in charge completes an accident report and, if necessary, a rescue data report. Copy the reports and put one in the Associate Executive Director’s box and the copy in the Aquatic Director’s box.
• Report for duty with sufficient time to check lifesaving equipment, to be in the proper and appropriate lifeguard uniform, and to be briefed on any changes of schedule or procedures.
• Understand and follow YMCA emergency procedures. Notify an Aquatics Director and/or Building Supervisor if an incident or accident occurs.
• Insure the safety of our members at all times by using the 10-20 rule of scanning, enforcing rules, and keeping the walkways and exit areas clean and clear.
• Insure the cleanliness of the Natatorium by following sanitation policies for the pool deck and monitoring the pool chemistry as directed.
• Inspect and maintain all safety and first-aid equipment daily. If an item is in ill repair, notify the Director of Aquatics immediately.
• Maintain a level of fitness necessary to perform required lifeguard and swim instructor skills.
• Assist with keeping accurate records of pool chemistry tests, member usage charts, and safety inspections. Document all accidents and incidents utilizing the proper forms and issue copies to the appropriate management.

Swim Instruction:
• Instruct swimming lessons in basic and advanced stroke skills according to class swim level as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines.
• Possess the knowledge and skills needed to instruct classes in the above-mentioned techniques.
• Teach and demonstrate in a positive manner.
• Treat every student fairly and equally regardless of circumstances and abilities, making each feel good about themselves and encouraging a fun environment.
• Accentuate positive attributes nurturing the whole; physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. Give praise for effort.
• Actively teach your classes in the water, give clear directions and provide adequate demonstrations.
• Arrive to your shift prepared with a lesson plan that meets the curriculum of the National YMCA Swim Program and with the necessary equipment for the lesson.
• Prepare class lesson plans with a natural progression of appropriate skills for the abilities and ages of the classes.
• Insure the safety of swim lesson students at all times while instructing by never turning your back on them, setting up class in a formation that allows you quick access to all students and keeping the walkways and exit areas clean and clear.
• Double-check the clothing safety of all participants for jewelry, gum, and clothing violations that can result in injury.
• Double-check and set-up all equipment prior to class. Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
• Monitor student progress in all classes. Report progress to the program director and inquiring parents.
• Be available before and after class to speak with parents.
• Assist the aquatics program in answering parent questions and concerns, and enforce all safety rules and regulations of the pool.
• Find a substitute teacher if one is needed or show for class if there is not one available.
• Keep accurate records of attendance and skills covered on a daily basis.
• Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
• Incorporate the YMCA values and mission statement in the teaching of classes.
• Training:
• Attend all trainings and meetings as directed.
• Maintain all required certifications.
• Pass written and physical tests conducted at guard/swim instructor training sessions.
• Teach advanced classes that pertain to your specialization.
• Attend additional pertinent trainings to further your goals.
• Supervision and Administration:
• Orient new lifeguard and swim instructor staff to pool procedures.
• Schedule and assist Program Directors in running and developing new program areas.
• Maintain professionalism with staff and members.
• Assist Program Director in interviews for new hires.
• Assist Program Directors with covering any unforeseen shift changes.
• Mentor an assigned group of staff in achieving more diversity of abilities.
• Monitor equipment to assure proper condition and readiness.
• Alert Program Director of needs in equipment and first aid supplies.
• Assist in the record keeping of various program statistics.
• Assist other staff and perform other duties as requested.
• Weekend Supervision of the aquatic program.
• Ambassador:
• Understand our YMCA’s mission, goals, objectives and programs to relay that information to inquiring families and participants.
• Understand the financial assistance given to members comes from our yearly “Strong Kids” campaign. Assist staff in helping to identify those individuals that may be interested in serving as a campaigner for and a donor to these efforts.
• Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other programs.
Additional duties:
• Model our YMCA values through fun, positive relationships with staff and members. Seek every opportunity to encourage, motivate and thank fellow staff members for their work.
• Be enthusiastic toward members and staff by learning their names and expressing an interest in their YMCA activities. Strive to enrich their YMCA experience by introducing them to new programs, staff, members and volunteer activities.
• Incorporate “Caring, Honesty, Respect, Responsibility” into all aspects of the position, to ensure YMCA values are being integrated into our culture and programs.
• Maintain a consistent professional image through dress, actions and relationships with others. Speak enthusiastically on behalf of the YMCA at given opportunities.
• Participate in applicable training and conferences to further professional growth as outlined in annual training plans.


• Minimum age of 18.
• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification, Oxygen Administration.
• Current YMCA Lifeguarding or Red Cross Lifeguarding and obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 60 days of hire.
• Willingness and ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness. The ability to pass lifeguard tests, physical and oral, at all times.
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• Ability to adequately observe participant activities, and enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate policies and procedures.
• Experience in Lifeguarding and Swim Instruction.
• Ability to adequately render first-aid.
• Ability to deal positively with both staff and members.
• The willingness to become skilled at various aquatic programs.
Physical Demands:
• Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
• Must be able to remain alert.
• Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods and lift 40 lbs.
• Adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals.
• Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
• Ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.
• Ability to communicate verbally in a clear and concise manner, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
